Communication

Slack for Unreal Engine

Team chat with channels, threads, huddles, and app notifications.

It's ideal to use Slack for internal coordination, quick questions, and automated notices. Move decisions and follow-up into the system that owns the project.

What it is

Slack organizes team conversations into channels and direct messages. A huddle starts in either place and adds audio, video, screen sharing, a dedicated thread, and a canvas for notes.

A build bot can post a failed Windows cook to a channel. The owner investigates in a thread and starts a huddle when someone needs to see the error in Unreal Editor.

Record the fix or decision in the linked task or project document after the conversation. Message visibility and retention depend on the Slack plan and workspace settings.

With Unreal Engine

An Unreal team can use channels for projects, departments, build notices, support, and short questions. A failed nightly build can post to a build channel, then stay in one thread while the team finds the cause.

Where it fits

Strengths

  • Channels separate team and project conversations.
  • Huddles support quick screen sharing and live troubleshooting.
  • Integrations can bring build, monitoring, and project notifications into chat.

Tradeoffs

  • On Free, only the latest 90 days of history are visible, and content older than one year is deleted by default.
  • Free huddles support two participants. Paid plans support up to 50, with video for up to 25.
  • Lists and Workflow Builder require a paid plan. Free canvases are limited to channels and direct messages.

Choose it when

  • Internal teams need quick, searchable communication and their build or project systems already post to Slack.
  • The studio has a separate durable record for tasks, decisions, and file review.

Look elsewhere when

  • The main audience is a public player or modding community.
  • Chat is being asked to replace formal production tracking or approvals.
  • The organization is already governed through Microsoft 365 and Teams.

How it works

Channels and direct messages
Channels give a project or team a shared conversation and searchable history. Direct messages are private to their participants. If the answer changes what everyone builds, bring it back to the channel or record it somewhere the team can see it.2
Threads
A thread keeps detailed replies under the message that started them and limits noise in the main channel. Notification behavior depends on whether a person started, joined, followed, or was mentioned in the thread.3
Huddles
A huddle starts from a channel or direct message and adds audio, video, multi-person screen sharing, a dedicated thread, and a canvas for notes. Free huddles support two participants. Paid plans support up to 50, with video for up to 25.18
Canvases, lists, and workflows
Free workspaces can use canvases in channels and direct messages. Lists and Workflow Builder require a paid plan. Slack applies data-management features differently across messages, files, canvases, and lists, so check the workspace policy before treating them as permanent records.6789
Slack Connect and apps
Slack Connect brings external organizations into shared channels. Every app requests scopes that define which data it can read and which actions it can take. Review those scopes and the app owner before installation, then remove access when the integration is retired.510

In production

  1. 01

    Separate conversation from automation

Use project and department channels for discussion. Route build failures to a channel with a named owner, and summarize routine successful runs so failures remain visible.

  2. 02

    Use threads for one conversation

Keep replies under the message that started the discussion. When the team reaches a decision, post a short result and link to the updated task or document.

  3. 03

Switch to a huddle for live debugging

Open a huddle for a live Unreal Editor walkthrough, crash reproduction, or build incident. Share the screen, reach the decision, then post the outcome and link the resulting task or incident record.

  4. 04

Move durable work out of chat

Create the task, update the runbook, approve the asset, or record the release decision in its owning system. Link it back into the thread so the conversation has a clear endpoint.

Best practices

Review each data type separately
Map retention and export behavior for messages, files, canvases, lists, huddle notes, and connected systems. Confirm the policy through a test workspace before treating Slack as a required record.
Audit external and automated access
Review Slack Connect members, apps, bots, workflows, and owners on a schedule. Remove access when a client, vendor, employee, or integration no longer needs the channel.

Gotchas

Each Slack Connect organization controls its own data
In a shared channel, each organization applies its retention and export settings to content posted by its own members. One studio policy does not create one shared retention outcome.5
Free history has visibility and deletion limits
Free workspaces show the latest 90 days of history. Content older than one year is deleted by default, though owners can choose deletion after 90 days. Paid plans retain history for the lifetime of the workspace by default, and owners can set a shorter policy.48
A public channel can widen canvas access
An invite-only canvas or list added to a public channel can become visible to everyone in the workspace. Check the container and the object permissions before placing sensitive planning material in a channel.6
Editing can reset the retention clock
An edit to a canvas or list can restart its age for retention purposes. Do not assume the creation date predicts when that content will be removed.7
Apps have their own permissions
Check the scopes each app requests and who owns the integration. Channel membership alone does not describe all the data an app can access.10

Adoption checklist

  • Write channel naming, purpose, and archive rules, then keep bot traffic out of discussion channels.
  • Review message, file, canvas, and list retention settings.
  • Audit external Slack Connect members and installed applications.
  • Define which decisions must move into tasks, documents, or review records.
  • Give incident and build-notification channels an explicit owner.
